How to Look Younger Naturally, 10 Ways

(Last Updated On: December 19, 2022)

Transitioning through midlife sure is interesting. On one hand, our kids are grown and have families of their own, the occupants of our home may have dwindled to one or two (well, except for the furry friends), and we may have waved goodbye to the coworkers for the last time and never looked back. That’s cool.

We can take a deep breath, put up our feet and decide what we want to do now. Our lives may go in a totally new direction in midlife, and that’s cool, too.

What I find not so cool, though, are the changes in my body that are occurring during my “glorious” midlife years. There are two sides to everything, and the sags, bags, wrinkles, droops and creaks are the other side for sure!

I’m a proponent of aging naturally so no talk of surgeries, fillers and the like on this site. But I’m also not going to plunk my little behind in a chair, pick up a book and a candy bar and say, “oh well” to those changes in my body.

Nope, not this girl. I’ve learned how to look younger naturally, and am so excited to share them with you!

Some of these simple tips (I call them ‘look younger secrets’) address our attitude and outlook on life, and others are more concrete steps we can take to maintain a youthful appearance, such as our makeup, hairstyles, how we put outfits together and other small but significant details.

If you’re a woman over 60, perhaps in your 50’s, or simply want to create your best appearance, learn how to look younger naturally!

Our Attitude

look younger secrets

Relax and embrace this time in your life, because you only get to do it once. And, have you noticed how time goes by more quickly as you get older? I sure have!

TIP #1 Smile! While a smile may not literally take years off of your face, it will definitely give you a more attractive appearance and perceived as younger. I’ll take that any day!

Our Approach to Makeup

how to look younger than your age naturally

Most of us with mature skin already know that we should avoid these two mindsets:

  • More is better when it comes to applying makeup, and
  • It’s always worked for me in the past, so why change?

So we know what NOT to do to look younger naturally, but how to look younger with makeup is something we all want to achieve.

TIP #2 Moisturize! Invest in a quality moisturizer for your face, neck, and body. Dry, flaky skin will make you appear older.

I’ve discovered a line of natural, cruelty-free anti-aging skincare from City Beauty that is awesome and effective. Check out my City Beauty Reviews.

TIP #3 Use a foundation primer. It will help to even out the skin tones and prevent foundation from settling into lines and wrinkles. I am amazed at how well a primer works!

TIP #4 Use liquid or cream based products vs. powder based products on your face. The powder can get caught in the fine lines on our face and accentuate them. Liquid foundation will work well if your complexion is relatively clear. Use a cream based foundation to cover age spots and broken capillaries.

I’ve been using the H20 Skin Tint from Pixi Beauty. It’s a water-based gel that evens out my skin tones but is light and never cakes. I love it!

TIP #5 If you wear lipstick, use a lighter lip color that is not matte, but also not overly shiny.

I’ve tried a number of different products on my lips (I’m not an avid lipstick wearer) and although some I’ve used have been okay, my hands-down favorite is BoomStick Color. It is designed to allow your natural skin tone to show through…maybe that’s why I love it so much. It really is a natural look with just a bit of sheen.

Food to Look Younger

food that helps you look younger naturally

It may not be part of the 10 ways to learn how to look younger naturally, but food to look younger is not to be taken lightly. The age-old saying, you are what you eat, has stood the test of time for a reason, my friends.

There is a host of information, suggestions and how-to’s out there when it comes to what we should eat to look younger naturally. I think these tips from our friends at Eat This, Not That make a lot of sense, and I want to share them with you.

  • Shiitake Mushrooms to stop graying hair. Some of us don’t want to see the gray because we think it makes us look older. The copper found in these mushrooms can help provide what our body needs to keep our hair from turning gray. (If you’re not a fan of mushrooms, like me, brazil nuts are also a natural source of copper).
  • Sweet Potatoes for that natural glow. How so? Researchers have found that people who consume more portions of red and orange fruits and veggies had a more sun-kissed complexion that those who didn’t. High on the list are sweet potatoes!
  • The next food to look younger is…Cheddar Cheese. Compounds in the cheese adhere to tooth enamel, like a white strip, to help fend off acid. Don’t stop brushing your teeth, but consider snacking on cheddar cheese.
  • Spa Water to erase dark circles. One of the most common causes of dark circles under the eyes is dehydration, with salty foods, alcohol, hot weather and even exercise contributing to this issue. What can you do? Cut up some citrus fruits, leave the rind on, and soak in a pitcher of ice water. Then, drink up!
  • Lean Beef for strong, shiny nails. How? A diet rich in protein, iron and zinc are key to strong, beautiful nails. All of these nutrients are found in a small portion of lean red meat.
  • Almond Butter for healthy, thick hair. This food to look younger contains protein, healthy fats and a combination of vitamins that have all been linked to hair health, particularly vitamin E.
  • Tomatoes to reverse sun damage. Foods high in antioxidants, deeply colored fruits and veggies in particular, can help fight the oxidizing effect of UV rays. A double benefit is the boost they give to collagen, a molecule that helps skin retain its youthful structure.

Our Hair Color & Style

natural ways to look younger than your age

Nothing can make a woman look older quicker than an outdated hairstyle, whether it’s short or long. Even if you think your current style is pretty good, next time you head to the salon take some time before your appointment to thumb through a few magazines or online sources for some inspiration.

Then, talk with your stylist and make a decision together.

TIP #6 Keep the color around your face soft, and consider a lighter overall color if you’ve worn it very dark. Unless, of course, you’ve let your hair go natural gray. In that case, wear it proudly! I do, and I’d love to show you how I went gray quickly – in an afternoon.

TIP #7 Many women over 50 and over 60 find that a shorter hairstyle works better for them, for a number of reasons. Now don’t get my wrong, girls, I’m not suggesting we all get pixie cuts, not even close!

But, look at the beautiful woman in the image below with a…yes…a modified pixie AND gray hair! I love the wide side swept bang because that takes the “ho-hum I’m older now pixie cut” to a dramatic, updated level.

Side note, ladies: if you wear glasses make sure your hair style coordinates with the frames.

Healthy, shiny hair that is shoulder length or shorter and cut well is typically most attractive and will make you look younger.

10 ways to naturally look younger

Fashion over 50 is a very personal decision, and I don’t want to give the impression that I’m telling you what to wear. But, the goal of this discussion is to learn how to look younger naturally, so keep that in mind!

Some mature women gravitate to a baggy style of clothes thinking that will make them look slimmer. It really doesn’t work for most people.

TIP #8 If you want to keep your top half covered with longer sleeves and hems, wear the bottom half, the pants, a bit more snug in the legs, with a touch of spandex, rather than loose and baggy. That will do two things for you:

Check out this post that shows how Covered Perfectly, an online shopping source for women over 50, has perfected that look for our top half.

TIP #9 Keep the outfit simple and add drama with accessories, something a bit trendy and unexpected:

  • your fresh, trendy hairstyle!
  • a snazzy belt
  • flats with an eye-catching pattern
  • statement earrings or necklace

Side note, ladies: wear a properly fitted bra, particularly if you are well endowed. The freshest haircut, naturally lovely makeup and flattering outfit will immediately be overshadowed by the girls drooping down to your waist, a sure sign of an ‘older woman’.

Our Attention to Details – how to look younger naturally

natural look younger secrets

It’s the small things that can make a huge difference, and looking younger is no exception. Here are a couple of simple, well known, but really important look younger secrets to remember.

TIP #10 Pay attention to proper posture. I say this to myself every day because I tend to slouch.

It is such a simple thing, but standing straight and walking confidently will help us to look, and feel, younger. You don’t have to walk fast, just walk confidently.

BONUS TIP #11 Remain hydrated, control the alcohol intake and don’t smoke. There really isn’t much more to say here, other than adequate water consumption will help keep your skin healthy and looking younger, over indulging in alcohol will age your skin quickly, and smoking will make your face look hard and wrinkly as well as kill you. Done, done and done.

Aging is a fact of life. Looking your age is not.

Looking Younger is a Mindset

We can never turn back the clock. That’s a fact. And if our philosophy is to embrace our age, whatever that may be, but still look fresh and youthful, much of that ’embracing’ starts within us.

If my mind, and my heart, are grateful for the day, accepting of myself right where I am, and I’m looking forward to what the day will bring, that is the foundation to looking younger.

To that foundation we add the outward finishes, such as skin care, makeup, hair styles and fashion. They’re like the jewelry that completes the outfit.

So we can use our knowledge of how to look younger naturally as a guide, knowing that true youthfulness and beauty starts from within. You can’t buy it, wear it or force it to happen. It comes from the heart.

  1. Hi Candi I agree that keeping healthy and your mindset will help you to look younger. You have some great tips on looking younger on the outside but I agree your mindset is an important part. If you feel health and alive then you will look happier and more vital. My biggest concern is my hair, I find it is very fine and can never find a style that I’m really happy with. any suggestions?

    1. Hi Sue! Yes, I think that how we feel and perceive ourselves on the inside sets the tone for how we look on the outside. My hair is so thick and curly that it’s at the opposite end of the spectrum, so I can’t give you first hand experience. But I’ve been reading about hairstyles and I’ve seen that there are certain ways to layer fine hair to make it appear thicker and fuller. I think the key is to find a stylist who know how to work with fine hair and give the proper cut. xo

      1. Candi, you are doing amazing work! Thanks for sharing your wonderful posts ❤️. Just want to add my 2 cents. After having used some anti-aging creams for years I decided to move on and I got Tretinoin Cream 0.02%. Just for anti-aging. I have dry, sensitive Rosacean skin and I can’t tolerate many actives so I knew there was a possibility my skin would not like Retin-A. However, knowing it’s the best anti-aging treatment out there, I just wanted to try and see. So happy 😊 I Googled ‘Ret247get’ and got it. I really love my Tretinoin Cream. It works and it’s cheap. I’d say don’t waste $$ on overhyped and ineffective “anti-aging” creams. Try Tretinoin but be very careful. Vitamin A acid is very powerful and you really have to build up very slowly. Be patient. It’s a marathon, not a sprint. Tretinoin doesn’t work overnight and it isn’t a miracle worker. It takes at least 1-2 months to notice real benefits. Last but not least: it’s not for everyone. Some people just cannot tolerate it so they would have to use other anti-aging treatments/actives like vitamin C. And/or another form of Vitamin A like Retinol or Retinaldehyde. Maybe less potent, but still effective.

  2. Recently had my grey hair chopped into 1920s style. Husband thinks ‘it’s cute.’ At over 70 that’s sweet with me! So thanks for sharing your articles re ageing well. Fine hair? Product available from Aveda…online if not stocked at your hairdressers is A1 for fine hair. Called ‘Thickening Tonic’. There’s an online demonstration of how to apply on Aveda website.
