After all, your home is supposed to be the place you go to relax and unwind at the end of a long, hard day. Ultimately, the type of environment you create can end up making all the difference between a sigh of relief and a sigh of disappointment.
When it comes to stability, you can get this feeling from buying property and owning your home. But even if you are living in a rental residence, you can create an environment that reflects the type of calm, peacefulness and stability that we strive for.
Let’s take a look at the ways you can ensure that your home draws you in at the end of the day.
Steps for Creating a Calm, Peaceful and Stable Home
Treat All Rooms as Important
Rather than focusing on just the main living areas of the house, give the same level of time, care and love to every room and space in your home.
Most of us have a room or area that we always mean to finish decorating or a place where you go to dump all your clutter and quickly shut the door. But, we still know it’s there, don’t we?
So, in your mission to turn your home into a sanctuary, no room should be left behind! It may take some time to accomplish, as there are probably little things like time…and the budget…that may get in your way. But you can do a little bit in each space on a regular basis to keep it looking good and a work in progress as far as the decorating and style are concerned.

Win the Battle Against Clutter
When your house is full of clutter, this can lead to a sense of chaos which is both physical and emotional. A cluttered house can lead to a cluttered mind, and goodness knows I have enough stuff floating around in my head as it is. It can also lead to the everyday annoyance of having to search for things which have become lost in the world of the mess that has pervaded your home.
Tackling clutter is cathartic, and keeping a more minimalist home is a good way of making sure that you reduce the sense of tension caused by owning more things than you have space for.
I’ve read articles that talk about decluttering in a day, or in a weekend. If you think you’re up to that challenge, go for it! For me, I would take more of a long term approach…like a month and a half. 🙂 Here is a 6 week plan to declutter your home that is reasonable, takes one room at a time, and could be just what you need!
The Effects of Color
The colors in your home can end up impacting you in a way which is psychological, emotional and physical, including your mood and energy levels.
Colors in the red area of the color spectrum are known as warm colors and include red, orange, and yellow. These warm colors evoke emotions ranging from feelings of warmth and comfort to feelings of anger and hostility.
Colors on the blue side of the spectrum are known as cool colors and include blue, purple, and green. These colors are often described as calm, but can also call to mind feelings of sadness or indifference
When I work with clients and they are unsure about how to use color in their homes, I most often will advise them to use neutrals on the walls and the larger upholstered pieces, and color in the accents. It is easier to change out the accent pillows on the sofa than to buy a new sofa, if the color(s) chosen just don’t work for you!
It is fascinating to read more about color and how it can influence our outlook and behavior. Take a minute to do some research about the effects of the different colors, so that you can make an informed decision about how you are going to use them in your home. You might be surprised at some of the color psychology!
Out With the Bad, in With the Good
Almost everything in your home…the furniture, the accessories, the wall decor, the rugs, the lighting...it all evokes some type of feeling or memory. It might be as simple as “yep, I bought that at Pier 1 last year and it was on sale”, which would be a positive feeling. Or, you might have a lamp that says, “I came to you from your mother”, which takes you back to some fond memories (hopefully!) when you gaze at it.
Perhaps it could be souvenir which reminds you of an incredible trip, a photo of a happy family event or a piece of art which brings you pleasure. As you move through your home, these items can give you an instant mood boost.
However, if there are things in your home which bring up nothing but negative feelings, unhappy memories, or might literally make you angry when you look at them, consider removing them.
Introduce Nature into Your Home
Human beings have an inclination towards nature. Even though we have created an environment which exists largely indoors, there are a number of ways that you can introduce natural elements into your own home.
A few natural elements which can act in a decorative way include houseplants, flowers, sand, rocks, stones, and water features. If your decor style lends itself, how about creating a focal point wall with natural or faux stone? An organic element can be introduced with furniture, too, rustic wood finishes, stone tops and other natural elements.
Flooring is another way to create an organic vibe. Whether you go with a wood, stone or faux product, your home can exude a natural overall feeling with flooring that brings the outdoors in.
Here is an example from my home. When I bought my condo it had plain white tile on the floor. It was cold to walk on and also gave off a sterile vibe. Then I had a distressed wood look product installed (LVP…luxury vinyl plank). It made a word of difference and immediately my home felt more warm, inviting and organic.
I’ve since changed the look of the coffee bar area as well, to continue with the natural, organic vibe. Have you noticed how one thing seems to lead to another when you’re decorating???
You could also look to blend the indoor/outdoor boundaries of your home by installing more doors and windows in areas of your home overlooking the garden or the places where there is plenty of natural light.
Create Zones in Your Home
You can help keep things in focus if you create zones in your home for playing, resting and working.
For example, in your home office, it’s helpful to create an environment which is conducive to work by removing any distractions. This can be a challenge when the area is multi functional. But whenever possible, keep the work area for work, so you won’t be tempted to sit and watch that new Netflix series.
In your bedroom, your goal is to make sure that it is free of clutter to help your mind rest. Anything else found in that room should enhance your ability to relax, de-stress and prepare yourself for a good night’s sleep!
Even in the Great Room, which by definition is multi functional, it will help to create a more stable and potentially peaceful environment if the functions are clearly defined. This can be accomplished using area rugs, lighting that is appropriate for the function of the zoned space, and the size and arrangement of the furniture in the zone. Make a Plan!
When you are aiming to create a harmonious home environment, you don’t have to make all the changes overnight. As long as you are making the improvements little by little, you’ll notice a positive improvement to your mood and stress levels. Make a list of the tasks that you would like to accomplish in your home, and you’ll feel a sense of satisfaction to be gained by ticking them off one-by-one.
Consider gathering all of your home’s occupants and discussing how they feel about their particular room or space, or the overall feel of your home. It will be enlightening as well as increase your chances of success in making the agreed upon changes!
Creating a home which provides a sense of calmness, peace and stability is something we can all work toward and achieve. I’ve given you some general guidance, you will need to take a personal approach to this task as well.
Remember, small steps are bound to get you closer to achieving your goals as opposed to not doing anything at all. Have some perseverance and a plan, and you will get there!
