Do you want the best tips for creating a welcoming home exterior? Let’s take a look at this short, but essential, list and see what attention your home might need.
We all want our homes to be as welcoming as they can be to guests and visitors, and for our own comfort and satisfaction, too. To that end, we put a lot of effort into the interior of our homes…selecting the color palette, the furniture and decor, the flooring, the finishes…for most of us it’s an endless project!
How about your home’s exterior, though? Do you give it as much consideration? I have to be honest, and say that sometimes that answer is a no. I’ve been in hundreds of homes through the years, and I always find it interesting, and a bit perplexing, why some homeowners spend a lot of time and money on the interior, but almost neglect the exterior.
I think sometimes we become ‘blind’ to certain features, finishes, or even the lack of attention to our home’s exterior. We drive up, pull into the garage, enter our home through the garage door, and never even see, or think about, the front yard or entry. Pssst…am I describing you??
No worries, my friend. Take a look at these tips, do some planning ahead for the season of year that is most appropriate for outdoor activity, and make your list!

Creating a Welcoming Home Exterior
Fabulous Front Door
A fabulous front door doesn’t have to cost a fortune. It is what you do with the entry that makes it memorable. It might be the color (how striking are these black front doors shown above!), a particular style, or perhaps the size.
Your front door might be quite simple if the style of home calls for it, and you could make it memorable with the decorative accents such as hinges, house number, mailbox, etc.One of the most significant actions you can take with your front door, the entry area and the entire porch is…ready?…keep it clean!! It makes a world of difference.
Take a peek at the front doors shown throughout this post for more ideas. 🙂
Proper Outdoor Illumination
It’s a good idea to add some lights to your front walkway so that it is well illuminated at nighttime. There are so many different styles and price points, there really is something for every home with it comes to outdoor lighting.
When guests arrive for a dinner party or a family gathering, they will be able to find their way to your front door easily without stumbling and possibly falling. You don’t want that to happen!
Consider adding a responsive light close to your front door. This will then turn on whenever it detects any movement approaching the door.
Creative Window Boxes
One of the best ways to brighten up and create a welcoming home exterior is to add some window boxes. You can then add some of your favorite kinds of greenery and/or flowers. It’s a fresh and organic way to bring in an interesting color to add to your home’s exterior palette.
Sometimes, a home’s exterior can look a bit, well, uninteresting, but adding a couple of window boxes will add some fabulous pops of color. It is wise to do a bit of research so you’ll know what style of window box to add to your home’s exterior. Hint: the window box should be consistent with your home’s style and architecture.
Then, you’ll be able to select the perfect compliment to your home, and it might be right here in the selections shown below!
A Clear Path To The Front Door
Keep the nasty little weeds pulled, too, as that can really detract from your walk way appearance. Try to keep it clear as well by trimming back any bushes, shrubbery or grass that might be encroaching on the path.
Stylish Boundary Finishes
Some homeowners prefer to showcase their property boundaries using are trees, hedges, fences, and metal railings. If your property’s perimeter has an organic boundary marker such as tree, shrubs or hedges, keeping them well trimmed will greatly enhance the overall property appearance.
If you have a fence, add some caps onto the posts, as in the photo above (I just love a beautiful picket fence!) as it adds style, class and a finished look to the fencing. You can see pictures here to get an idea of what they look like.
When it comes to metal railings and fences, be informed and take the appropriate action to make sure they are properly maintained. Some materials require more maintenance than others.
Well, there you have it, the best tips for creating a welcoming home exterior. Have you started making your ‘to do’ list yet? It may require some work and a bit of investment, but the results are more than worth it!
