If you’re a woman over 50 you know that finding casual clothing that’s comfortable, stylish, and flattering to our changing figures is not easy. We sure don’t want to dress and look like old ladies, but the years of our youth are now behind us.
It can be a challenge for sure. So when there is a source that offers all of the above we have reason to rejoice! And that is what J.Jill styles have for us.
If you’re not familiar with the brand J.Jill, here is a little bit of history. They were founded in 1959 as a specialty store in Massachusetts, and then evolved into a direct catalogue business.
In 1999, 40 years later, J.Jill opened their first retail location as well as an e-commerce site. Today you can choose to shop online at JJill.com or at one of over 200 retail locations throughout the U.S. Whether you want to see, try on, and feel, or shop conveniently at home, J.Jill has you covered.
Personally, I’ve been familiar with this line for a number of years and utilized their styles in my capsule wardrobe and other casual style collections. So when I was asked to preview and share my experience with their 2023 Spring Collection I was more than happy to oblige!

The J. Jill Philosophy
There are so many choices for us when it comes to selecting a brand. Why is J. Jill one to consider?
For me, it comes down to their philosophy and approach to style. I want to be confident that the brand understands me as a woman in midlife, particularly my body shape. While we are all unique in our body shape, personal style, and preferences, there are some fundamentals that most of us share.
J. Jill takes the ‘style made simple’ approach, and I like that. They use quality fabrics that flow well and with ease, and look great. And, they realize that we are not a ‘one size fits all’ woman. They offer casual wear in sizes from XS to 4X, in Regular, Petite, and Tall, with bust darts or elasticized waistbands to help ensure a perfect fit.
Petite: under 5’4″ with sizes between 0 and 18. This is my choice because of my height and short arms/legs.
Regular: with a wide range of sizes, many women will find that this is their choice
Tall: 5’7 1/2 or taller, with sizes 4 through 18 offered.
J. Jill: Casual Clothes for Women Over 50
As I was familiarizing myself with the Spring Collection from J. Jill, I noticed several things about their styles overall that appealed to me as a woman in my 60s:
- Soft, flowing fabrics
- A variety of neckline options (one size definitely does not fit all when it comes to a flattering neckline!)
- Options in sleeve lengths
I also was pleased with the extensive options available in women’s fashions because, of course, we don’t all dress the same, enjoy the same types of styles and accessories, nor should we.
For a woman who finds that J. Jill meets their styling needs and wants, there are so many choices:

My Review of the J. Jill Pieces
I decided to order a matching set, tank top and linen shirt, although each piece functions very well on it’s own. The soft watermelon color really appealed to me with my coloring and natural gray hair.
Linen Tab-Sleeve A-Line Shirt: This linen blend shirt is so versatile! I ordered the petite because my arms are short, and with the sleeves down it fit just right. But, I also love the fact that there are built in tabs to roll the sleeves up to a 3/4 length, which I typically prefer.
I also decided to button up the shirt and offer yet another way to where this shirt. The back of the shirt has light shirring to give it some shape, too.
The detailing is evident in this linen blend shirt, right down to the agoya-shell buttons. Yes, it wrinkles, but that is to be expected with a linen blend. I don’t mind.
Perfect Reversible Tank: I will always be a tank top type of girl, no matter my age. I don’t wear them in public like I used to (unless I’m at the beach, and then, who cares?), but they will always be my layering piece of choice.
I love the muted watermelon color, and there is just enough stretch in the fabric to keep from being too bulky. The fabric is 95% cotton and 5% lycra. In fact, I ordered one in white, too, because I knew it would be perfect for me.
The reversible benefit is with the neckline: I can choose to wear a V-neck or a scoop neck. Nice!
The good news is that there are many more styles of tops available that will appeal to women over 50, with short sleeves, 3/4 sleeves, and long sleeves. We make the choices that work for us, don’t we?
