Welcome to Coffee with Candi, a time for us to have a chat every week on Friday and catch up.

Well, I’ll have a chat with you about my week…what’s been happening, the good the bad the exciting, the boring…most importantly, what have I learned about life, my family, my friends, work, health, looking my best…I’ll spill it honestly and openly with you. Always with a fresh cup of hot, black coffee in my hand. I think better with java in my paw.

And, I’ll share one special thing that has brightened up my week, so it can potentially make you smile, too. It might be a new gadget, a piece of furniture, a nifty clothing find, a recipe, or something to make your life easier. It’s my gift to you that will keep on giving. 🙂

Well, we’re now into the annual frenzy of the holiday season! I have to admit that I don’t get crazy at this time of year, never have, and although things are definitely busy (especially with my upcoming move), my holiday season is quite tame compared to many.

My life, and my family’s, took an unexpected turn last week. My mom, who is 92, fell on Thanksgiving evening and had emergency hip surgery. So I am with her in MI as I write this post, keeping her company at the rehabilitation center and making sure her needs are met. I am grateful that I can work from anywhere as a blogger!

How is the holiday shopping coming along? It can be so difficult to find unique and interesting gifts for people, especially those that are hard to buy for! Foods to Eat if You Overeat: We all tend to eat too much during the holidays, including consuming foods that we typically don’t indulge in. Our bodies react to that and go into overdrive, trying to undo the damage done. Metabolizing fatty and carbohydrate-rich food causes the body to produce free radicals, which attack cells. Ultimately, this can promote the development of chronic conditions like heart disease, diabetes and cancer.

But, not to worry. We can recover from the potential damage of an overindulgence and reduce those pesky free radicals by eating these nutrient-rich foods, say our friends from

Fruit – Eating antioxidant-rich fruits—including berries, grapes, kiwi and cherries—helps minimize the harmful free-radical damage that occurs after a meal. The Pistachio Peach Toast shown above looks mighty yummy!

Vinegar – Having a tablespoon of vinegar with your meal, perhaps drizzled on your salad, may temper the spike in blood sugar that occurs after eating a big, carbohydrate-rich meal.

Wine – A glass of red may reduce the negative impact of high-fat foods by lowering levels of a compound—produced in the body after eating fat—that’s linked with heart disease. Remember that moderation is key, and you can find antioxidants in fruits and veggies, so use good judgement. 🙂

Spices – Adding spices to your meal may help to lessen the negative effects of overeating. Researchers think the spice blend may help slow fat absorption—and the antioxidants help mop up harmful free radicals produced when you overeat.

It can be a challenge, but if you plan ahead it is possible to enjoy the holidays without gaining weight.
