Cute Casual Outfits for Women, or, How to Not Dress Like an Old Lady

(Last Updated On: September 28, 2023)

I’m always up for advice on how to not dress like an old lady. After all, I may be in my 60’s and Nana to my grand kids, but I don’t have to dress like my days of stylin’ are over! Not this girl. So I thought I’d share some thoughts and suggestions for readers who feel the same way, and offer some cute casual outfits for women that are budget friendly, too.

On the one hand we are living our mid life years and beyond. We’re not teenagers or young women any longer…shoot…we’re not even in our 40’s. So to some extent we need to be mindful of that fact when it comes to fashion. But we’re not dead yet, either, if you know what I mean.

As women in our 50’s and 60’s we know what we like, what works for us and how to put our style together. But, it’s nice to have a look at some suggestions, too, of some different types of fashion options. It can be easy to just wear the same things over and over again. I know…I tend to do that myself.

We also should know how to dress for our particular body shape, as our choices as women over 50 and over 60 can either enhance our positives, or have the potential to show off some stuff we’d rather not show (you know, the belly fat that we all acquire in midlife)

I will make a suggestion, and that is to always, always check yourself from the rear view. Don’t stop with the hair…keep going all the way down, before you leave the house. Just sayin’.

Cute Casual Outfits for Women

Black and White from Chico’s

I love these pull on crop slacks! There is just enough stretch in the fabric, and they sit slightly below the waist. Slim and trim but will work for girls like me with a bit of curve in the hips. $79.50

Here are the additional pieces that make up this style:  Scoop Neck Tee, Crystal double strand necklace, Crystal drop earrings

Organic Look with Linen and Leather Accents

Here are some highlights for each piece in this look I call the Organic Look.

Love these linen, cropped wide-leg pants! They’re shown in a taupe-gray shade, and come in a variety of colors.
The 3/4 sleeve tan cotton/linen blend top is the perfect compliment to the trousers.
Add an organic look flat sandal with jute trim to carry on the look.
Perfect for times when a hat is in order is this bead trimmed fedora style sun hat. Very cool.
A multi pocket cross body bag ties in with the color of the pants, and is very versatile on its own.
You won’t see yourself coming and going with this unique beaded statement necklace.
Weekender watch in chocolate brown is the perfect accessory piece.
The gold tone hammered hoop earrings complete this unique, organic and very stylish look.

My interpretation of the outfit shown above. Simple, casual. I love these cropped pants! They are all cotton, from the same manufacturer of the linen pants.

This is what I purchased:

Casual Look in Black with Blush Accents

Here are some highlights for each piece in this look. You can probably tell that I love working with, and wearing, black!

The boot cut pants have a timeless style.
I love the fabric, drape and length of the 3/4 ruched sleeve blazer. It’s a timeless piece that goes with everything.
(Similar to photo)The loose fit sleeveless dark blush top has a double layer one of them is chiffon. And, it comes in a wide variety of colors.
Tie this pretty bird patterned scarf around your neck for a feminine look.
Black mule takes you effortlessly from day into evening.
Oversize vegan leather tote in blush is practical and pretty.
I love the wave silhouette of the bangle bracelet.

And, classic stud earrings complete the look.

Love this look!

Put Separates Together & Create Your Cute and Casual Outfit

The perfect tops to create casual outfits

A layered look with my Covered Perfectly 3/4 sleeve top. Love it!

I’m 65, so I understand that looking cute and casual doesn’t necessarily include the tank tops and shorts that we may have worn in our 30’s and 40’s. It’s still my go-to outfit when I’m sitting in the office at home, but when I’m out and about I choose my separates a bit differently.

Recently I learned more about Covered Perfectly, the online retailer that specializes in tops (and some bottoms, too) for women over 40. You can read my post about Covered Perfectly here.

I love the micro modal fabric that many of the tops are constructed from. And, they are styled to accent our best features and hide those that tend to become a little less attractive as we age.

Here are some examples for you:

Many of the tops are offered with 3/4 sleeves, which work perfectly for me! They cover enough of the jiggly stuff on my upper arms, but leave me some breathing space on my lower arms.

Every top you see is offered in a variety of colors or prints…very versatile!

You can also find several different styles of vests, which are wonderful for layering.

From the top left corner going clockwise:

Cardigans and Sweaters

Whatever you choose to call them, a sweater (or cardigan!) can make the perfect layering piece to a casual outfit. And, did you know that layers can actually help you look slimmer? Yep.

Casual Slacks & Cropped Styles

When you’re putting an outfit together for a casual setting, many times a pair of comfortable slacks, pants or cropped pants will serve as the foundation.

We’re looking for comfort without that old lady type styling (you know what I mean, girls) and I found some really nice options and examples for you from Nordstrom:

Hey there friend, do you struggle to find pants, jeans, crops, & capris that fit you well? Yep, most of us have that problem.

Well, take a minute to learn more about Measure & Made, and their unique sizing system called ShapeLogic. Once you find your perfect size, you can buy and wear any of the bottoms on their site and they’ll fit you well!

Curious?

Jeans are always on my list of casual clothing!

Jeans are such a personal thing, and always included in the wardrobe if you don’t want to dress like an old lady. Just kidding of course, but jeans are kind of timeless, aren’t they?

You can spend any amount you want on this wardrobe staple…hundreds or even thousands of dollars.

I choose to stay under $40 for my jeans, and these examples from Target give you some thrifty options, as most are around $30.

Styles shown include a curvy skinny jean (my choice, as I do have some curves!), boyfriend crop jean (love the fit!), boot cut jean, straight leg crop jean and a simple straight leg jean.

Take a look at the jeans offered at Target and see what you can find.

Casual Shoes, Sandals & Mules

A statement shoe can complete your stylish look without breaking the bank. And, the style doesn’t have to include a mile high heel, either. Simple shoes can be just as memorable, and you won’t injure yourself wearing them. The right addition for the cute casual outfits for women!

Here are some of my suggestions, curated for you:

Of course we don’t!

But, sometimes we DO grab the same styles over and over again because we’re comfortable with them. They’re safe choices.

Promise yourself to try something new and different with your wardrobe choices this season. My style suggestions may  not be your thing, but hopefully I’ve offered some ideas and inspirations for you to put together some cute casual outfits for women!

      1. Hi Nancy, I see that the ankle boot from Lola Shoes shown on this post is not available, which happens over time. I’ll update that. 🙂 If you do a Google search for Lola shoes you’ll see a number of sources that carry that line. Hopefully you can find what you’re looking for.

  1. I’m attending a Fashion Show/Brunch today with my much younger daughter and you’ve given me some much needed Style Inspiration this morning!
    Thanks-a-bunch! 🙂

    1. I hope you have a wonderful time with your daughter today, and I’m sure you’ll look just lovely and ever so stylish! 🙂

I fear I wouldnt enjoy the jumpsuits given my unfortunate predilection for visiting the ladies’ room a dozen times an hour, but they are cute. Especially on you! The cardigans look to be right up my alley. Thanks for the post!

    1. Thanks Maggie, I know that jumpsuits aren’t the easiest thing to wear when making lots of pit stops, but I’m glad you found the cardigans attractive!

  3. I really love some of these outfits. Thanks so much for putting this together in one place! Sometimes I need just a few good ideas in one place because otherwise all the options get so overwhelming.

    1. That’s great to hear, Cyndi, because I had the same thought. It’s easier sometimes when someone else has put a few ideas together for you.

  4. You are too cute!! I want to be like you when I grow up! 🙂 Your title had me laughing and so interested. I loved all your suggestions and smiled when you said you always go for black (me too!!)

  5. Such cute clothes! My girls won’t let me buy anything without their approval for myself because they said I pick out “old lady clothes”…..LOL! Thanks for the ideas!

  6. Great options. I love the sweaters and dusters. This will really help me put an outfit together, which is where I have issues 🙂

  7. Thanks for the inspiration of this post. I realized a few months ago that I not only dress like an old lady, like an old boring lady! LOL. I am working to freshen my wardrobe, dress more free and better reflecting how young, joyfilled, and vibrant I feel on the inside.

  8. I have recently transitioned from wearing scrubs and taking care of patients to an office job and business casual clothing. I love shopping and have developed a great appreciation for sweaters and cute jackets. You had some great pieces. Thanks for sharing.

  9. I would never, could never, wear a jump suit (it brings back too many memories of my mom wearing them in the 80s – LOL) but I do like the shoes you posted. LOVED the blog post title too!

    1. Well, glad you liked the shoes, it’s very true that ‘one style’ definitely doesn’t fit all. Thanks for taking a look 🙂

  10. Candi, too cute! Wish I could wear some of those shoes AND wish shoes for my AAAA width feet didn’t have to “break the bank!” I was looking at a picture of my grandmother the other day and was shocked when I realized the photo showed her at my current age. Loved her dearly, but she could have used this post!

    1. Candi Randolph

That’s funny! Looking at old photos can be a hoot. Thanks so much for stopping by, Jean!

  11. I never shop Target and yet I see so many cute things that others show. The jumpsuits are so cute and I love the blue low cut one but would need something to cover my 67 yr old arms.

    1. Candi Randolph

I know, the saggy skin is something we all have to deal with as we age. I would put a pretty sweater over it and create a layered look 🙂

  12. Ooh I’m inspired now, Candi and I do love a jumpsuit – except when you need to use the bathroom in a hurry LOL:) You have shown us that we can still look stylish at any age and on a budget! Thanks for sharing with us at #BloggingGrandmothersLinkParty and have a great week!
