Discovery – A Historical Romance – Book Review

(Last Updated On: July 22, 2019)

I love to read,  so when I was provided a copy of Discovery, a historical romance novel with a twist of mystery and intrigue to read and write a book review, I was excited.

Released in May, 2018 and written by author Leslie Schweitzer Miller, Discovery combines historical events with fictional characters to create a story that spans several hundred years, weaving back and forth between present and past as love blooms and the mystery unfolds.

Discovery - Book Review

There are two main present day characters, Dr. Giselle Gélis, a French Biblical scholar, and Dr. David Rettig, an American archeologist. They are business acquaintances who reconnect and fall in love. They travel through Southern France to learn more about one of her relatives, and the romance blossoms as they make the journey, but so does the mystery!

The historical aspect of Discovery revolves around Abbé François Bérenger Saunière, who actually lived in the late 1800’s in the remote mountain village of Rennes-le-Château in Southern France. The life of this 19th century priest has a significant impact on the two present day characters.

The little known historical mystery of Rennes-le-Château is woven through the story, climaxing with a discovery that could potentially change the foundation of the Christian faith.

As the tale progresses, we find intrigue, deception and even murder. Through it all, the main characters Giselle and David develop their relationship and their love for each other.

My Review of DISCOVERY

rennes-le-chateau- france - 2

I think Discovery is a very well written book, both in character development and creating a visual picture of the surroundings as the couple traveled through southern France. I’ve never been to France, but felt like I was there with the characters as they drove through the countryside, enjoyed the local cuisine or explored the historical sites.

The love and friendship that the couple developed was portrayed from both of their points of view, so as a reader I understood not only what they were thinking and saying, but why. That helped me to enjoy the story even more.

I will note three things that I experienced in my read of Discovery. First, the book jumps from the past to the present as the story’s foundation is laid. I had to really pay attention to the name of each chapter, as that told me if I was reading in the past or the present.

I also am rather ignorant of the French language, so I stumbled my way through the pronunciation of many of the character names. But, as  a reader I can call them anything I want, right? So once I decided how a particular name would be pronounced in my little head, I went with it. 🙂

Second, this is a book that requires your full attention in order to really appreciate what is happening and how the tale is unfolding. You will get much more out of the story if you are concentrating on the characters, the locations, the time (past or present) and the actions.

Finally, the premise of the story is very different from my own personal faith and beliefs, but I took the approach of reading it as fiction, which much of it is, and was able to enjoy the book very much.

If you are looking for a book that will let you travel vicariously through southern France, both past and present, and enjoy romance, mystery and intrigue, Discovery is the perfect choice!

  • Hi Candi this sounds like a book I would enjoy so thanks for the review. I have read similar styles which switch between different time periods and yes you do have to concentrate. I prefer to read these types of books when I’m on a relaxing holiday and can devote the time to reading for longer periods.
