How to Decorate a Mantel for Fall

Start with a theme or color scheme. The rich tones of burnt orange, deep reds, and warm golds are classics for a reason, but you don’t have to stick with traditional colors.

You can mix in muted tones like cream and sage green to give it a softer feel. The key to mantel styling is balance – pair smaller accents like mini pumpkins or pinecones with larger pieces such as a framed mirror, artwork, or oversized vases. If you’re looking for simple fall mantel decorating ideas, even just a few statement pieces can pull everything together.

The beauty of fall mantle decor is that it’s all about creating a space that feels welcoming and comfortable. So, whether you love the idea of a full, overflowing display or something a little more minimalist, the best part is making it your own.

We can tell that this is a simple Farmhouse style home, and the rustic decor speaks to it for sure.

A simple wood window frame takes the place of art or a mirror above the wood mantel, and it is adorned with a simple wood wreath. The natural wood is brought out in the chunky candlesticks, with some greens artfully arranged to look like they fell there naturally.

Notice, too that there are some books on each side (a different number of books to create a unique look), and a couple of small black/white check pumpkins.

The decor on the hearth continues the rustic theme as well as the black/white/natural look.

A simple white hearth looks wonderful with the understated fall decor elements: candles, pumpkins, simple acorn garland, a grapevine wreath, and simple picture frames.

Notice the different heights of the candles, pumpkins, and picture frames. It’s these little details that make a mantle arrangement look put-together and finished.

A simple grapevine wreath with a garland of berries, white vase with striking fall leaf branches, and a few gourds are all that adorn this all-white mantel and wall.

How cool is this fall decor on the mantel? A seasonal piece of art is the focal point, with a very interesting pair of glass-covered arrangements. A few pumpkins/gourds, and greens complete the look.

Notice the contemporary accent chairs and large buffalo check pillows – they make a memorable counterpoint to the rustic mantel and arrangement.

A contemporary home can keep it’s decor theme and pay homage to Autumn, as shown in the ultra-simple mantel arrangement. One fall arrangement is placed on the mantel along with several other pictures and mirrors.

Note that there are a total of 5 pieces in this arrangement, and they have different shapes, sizes, and heights. The odd number as well as the other factors are what make this look work so well.

I also love the deep toned wall color!

This mantel arrangement takes me right to the first Thanksgiving, with its simple choices in colors, shapes, and styles. You don’t have to spend a lot of money (sometimes none at all) to create an interesting and unique fall decor arrangement.

Here is another mantel and hearth arrangement that is beautiful in its simplicity. The art hanging on the brick wall still shines, because the pumpkins, candles, and greens are subtle in color and nothing is too large. But, everything works well together.

The chunky candlesticks and basket with pumpkins work well together, and then a smaller arrangement on the right is consistent in design – just enough to finish off the look.

We’re given a sneak peek of this fall mantel decorating, and it’s very simple – some fall-colored leaves, a small mirror, glass vase with leaf stems, and a couple of small decorative items.

But, what makes this display memorable are the white pumpkins with the word ‘fall’ stenciled on them, one letter per pumpkin.

It’s adorable! And, it is also a wonderful example of simplicity in design. You don’t need all kinds of stuff to create a memorable display.

This cozy fall decor uses color and texture to create a unique display. I love the all-white wall, white shutter over the mantel, natural basketweave basket, and then a simple green wreath. It’s a great example of layering shapes and textures.

With the variety of shapes, colors, and textures of the pumpkins on the hearth, the simple green garland and tiny white gourds is perfect on the mantel.

The greens that elegantly drape work so well with the brass candlesticks and white candles. Beautiful!

Hi Candi. I always enjoy your decorating posts. They are so inspiring. Now that we’re in a new apartment, I can enjoy decorating again. Although this time it’s a little different. Since we’re in Tunja, Colombia, where the temperatures remain about 65 degrees, all year round. I really like your fall decorating ideas, which I’d be able to use anytime here. We do have pumpkins out right now, and I love the idea of using those, along with the handmade baskets, that they have here, for my decorating theme. Although we don’t have a mantle now, I can easily find space on my dining table for some of your great ideas. Thank you for sharing. I’m going to pin some of these great photos. Xx
