Five Indispensable Essentials for Women Over 50

There is a saying that ‘getting older is not for the faint of heart’. I can relate to that as it pertains to the changes my body is going through. It does things I don’t want it to do, and refuses to cooperate when I fully expect it to do my bidding. What’s up with that?

Overall I have absolutely no complaints. My life is abundant and I have enjoyed good health, so I keep these annoyances in perspective. For me, living a healthy lifestyle, including regular exercise, has helped me to stay active and feeling pretty doggone good.

Some days are more challenging than others for sure, especially if I decide to get whiney about the aging process that I have no control over. You know, the changing body shape, the sagging, wrinkled skin on my arms (my grandson seems to enjoy pointing it out to me regularly), the wrinkles on the face, the belly fat, the unwanted additional sprinkle that happens after I pee…and other absolutely normal things that we all experience.

So I put overt, conscious effort, every single day, into remaining grateful for all of the wonderful things that are a part of my life. I also work hard to keep my aging body fit and strong, because I know that a healthy lifestyle will help my live longer.

All that said, there are a few essentials, ladies personal items specifically, that I have found to be indispensable as I travel through midlife, and I think they’re the best health and beauty products around. A couple of them are a wee bit personal, but are worth sharing. Perhaps these little life-savers these items will be helpful to you, too.

Ladies Personal Items: My Five Indispensable Essentials

1 | Leak-Proof underwear

Yep. I’m going to talk about it…leak proof underwear and why we need it….here goes.

There are some things that we just don’t talk about with everyone, and one of those topics as women in midlife is that annoying but uncontrollable little tinkle in our panties that occurs at the most inopportune times. Most of you know exactly what I am referring to. If you don’t, that’s awesome, and frankly I’m a bit jealous. But for the rest, read on.

We experience these little annoyances at different times. For me, it’s just after I take a potty break. It’s just a little tinkle in the panties. Not much, but enough to be really, really annoying.

Other women may have a more, shall we say, enthusiastic emitting of the tinkle, at other really annoying and inopportune times. A good laugh can cause a little leak, or a bit of coughing, even a sneeze. Seriously, is there ever a good time?

I’ve experimented with several different brands of leak-proof underwear. And of course, there’s always the little throwaway pads that come in a zillion different sizes and absorbencies. But when we use them, we’re contributing to the mass of garbage that is thrown into landfills. I’m trying to avoid that whenever possible.

Over the last few years I’ve worn several different brands of leak-proof underwear, even though my leaks are minimal. This protection is number one on my list of ladies personal items, out of necessity!

Zorbies

Recently I was gifted a pair of Zorbies, a relatively new line of products for both men and women, to handle incontinence as well as coverage for periods. And, they offer a choice between built-in protection, or underwear that will hold a replaceable pad. I agreed to try a pair of Zorbies Moderate Classic Style panty in return for an honest review, which is what I am documenting here. The opinions stated here are my own.

I checked out the Zorbies website before agreeing to try them, and one thing that I immediately noticed was the color as well as the style. They are all black, and the panty offers full coverage by design, which is different than other brands I’ve tried. They are not offering a pretty panty, although there’s nothing wrong with the style of Zorbies, but instead are offering the protection and absorbency that folks who experience incontinence are searching for.

Zorbies are designed to hold up to 12 teaspoons of fluid, which is more than most other similar products. They accomplish this by including a discreet front and back panel for additional peace of mind.

What did I think of Zorbies? Here are a few thoughts based on wearing them, washing them, and wearing them again:

• the first thing I noticed was the weight of the panty. I could literally feel that this panty was heavier than the typical ladies underwear, and to be honest I was a little concerned that it would feel heavy and bulky when I put the panty on. It was not. I felt comfortable and not at all like I was wearing fat, bulky, incontinence underwear, if you know what I mean.
• I don’t have a big leakage problem, so the Zorbies panty I wore never felt full, odorous, or otherwise uncomfortable. But keep in mind, they are constructed to hold up to 12 ounces of fluid. That’s quite a lot!
• the washing/drying instructions have to be followed as indicated. This means that after the Zorbies are washed on a delicate cycle, they are dried twice – 2 cycles. This is needed to ensure that the entire panty is completely dry.

Would I recommend Zorbies? Yes, particularly if you are a woman who experiences regular incontinence. They are definitely constructed to protect. Learn more about Zorbies for Women.

Speax (formerly Icon Undies)

I have also worn Icon Undies, now called Speax. I bought several pair and have worn them quite regularly. They are very comfortable to wear, stylish (as panties go), the protection is discreetly constructed (they use the magic wicking material that absorbs and dries really quickly), and they wash up really well.

I always wash on the delicate cycle/cold wash and dry with the least amount of heat, so that has helped them retain their construction and magic ability to make the tinkle disappear.

A few months ago I decided to give another brand of leak-proof underwear a try, and purchased one pair. Similar in cost to Icon Undies, I was quite disappointed in the look and the feel of them, both in the cut and the material. They remain in the underwear drawer, unused and unwanted.

2 | Jammies to keep me cool at night

Do you find yourself getting a little sweaty sometimes, particularly at night when you’re trying to sleep? Even if menopause is behind you, there is still the tendency to have warm moments throughout the day and night…I prefer to think of it as ‘glowing’. 3 | A face moisturizer that really works
