How Comfortable Are You in Your Home?

(Last Updated On: November 1, 2019)

I have a question for you. How comfortable are you in your home?

Our home is our haven, our sanctuary, our own little piece of the world. We can describe it in many ways, style it to express our preferences, but it should, above all, be comfortable. I don’t know about you, but there is nothing like heading in the front door of my home after a busy day of work on a project. I step inside, breathe in the scent that tells me I’m in my own little haven, and I instantly start to relax.

How do we make sure that our homes are comfortable, welcoming and the place that we truly call home? I believe that the key is to infuse a piece of ourselves and what we love into our home. It almost becomes an extension of ourselves. Let’s take a look at several of the rooms we all have, and come up with a few ideas.

The Living Room

How comfortable is your home

The main living area (we call it the Living Room, Family Room, Great Room, etc) is typically where we hang out and relax. I’m going to refer to it as the Living Room. When I think of relaxing, I think of comfort. So for me, that means comfy seating.

I work with many clients who need help selecting furniture, and one of the first things we do is ‘see and sit’. You can purchase any and all types of furniture online, and that is a wonderful thing. I’ve done it myself many times. But if you need to f-e-e-l the experience, go see and then sit in a sofa, chair, love seat, etc. to make sure it is comfortable for YOU.

Is your living area functional for you and your lifestyle?

Only you can answer that question. I have been inside hundreds of homes as a Realtor, Interior Decorator and Home Stager. Every one of them is a bit different, and the living area is configured, furnished and lived in uniquely.

Some homeowners have incorporated a small office area into the living room because it works well for their lifestyle. I’ve thought about doing that myself, because my room is large enough to accommodate a cute little desk. We’ll see. 🙂

If you entertain, you’ll want to have sufficient seating for that purpose, and arrange the space for conversation, or for watching the ‘big game’, or whatever you are planning for.

I have found through the years that it is better to take the time to find pieces you love than to just grab something because it looks good, that you saw on TV and thought it looked cool, or you’re in a hurry to get the room furnished. Inevitably you’ll end up being unhappy with the decision and uncomfortable with the selection.

The Bedroom

If there was ever a space in your home where you needed to feel comfy and cozy, it’s your bedroom. It is our private haven, one that we may show to many but only share with a few.

We want our bedroom to reflect our personal choices, and include the items, collections, art, and other selections that mean the most to us. My bedroom is where I keep some mementos from my late husband, as this is my private place and I want to see them there.

Some people fill their bedroom to the brim with all kinds of furniture, accent pieces, nic-nacs, books, what-not and maybe the kitchen sink. If that is what makes you happy, that’s cool. For me, a room that is welcoming but not too full of things besides the necessities is what gives me peace and prepares me for a good night’s sleep. Creating a bedroom, and a home, to love is most important!

Speaking of sleep, the quality of our sleep is largely determined by our mattress, and once again, a very personal decision. You can spend a few hundred dollars or thousands of dollars. There are vacuum packed mattresses that magically shape themselves when opened (we bought one of those awhile back and it was amazing to watch!), or mattresses made of materials you would not expect, such as the bamboo mattresses found at

If you need some help along the way to creating your most comfortable bedroom, I have a nifty little guide that will take you step by step through the process.

The Bathroom

Comfortable Living Room

Now, I know what you’re thinking, why would your bathroom need to be comfortable?

Well, think about it. It’s probably one of the rooms that you use the most often throughout the day so wouldn’t you want it to have a pleasant atmosphere? You know…enjoy the time that you have to spend taking care of life’s necessities?

I have been in some pretty awesome bathrooms, with amenities that will make you think you’re in a beautiful spa on a romantic getaway. Well, my bathroom doesn’t do that for me, but it gets the job done and has everything I need.

But again, that is a very personal choice. You might feel that your bathroom needs to be luxurious, have a certain type of soaking tub or shower design, or sinks that are of a particular height, or shape. So if you decide to spend the money and create that very personal haven, that’s awesome!

Most of the time we’ll use some simple ideas and suggestions to make our bathrooms comfortable. You don’t have to spend a lot of money to be satisfied and comfy.

Going back to the question, how comfortable are you in your home….it really comes down to doing what works for you, making sure you choose the colors, furniture and accessories that feel and look right to you, and you’re on your way to creating a home that is not only comfortable, but that you’ll love!

  • Hi Candi! Great inspiration and ideas in your post which are timely for me. For the last 10 years, we have lived downstairs from my in-laws. My FIL has passed away and my MIL is now in aged care however for the moment we are still here. It is dark and dingy and has never been completed. We thought we were moving in for a year not 10! We have an apartment at the Gold Coast which is our ‘home’, however we are in the process of renovating it and hope to move there once we sell and settle my MIL’s home. Both my husband and I are minimalists and I rather like neutral colours as they are calming to me. Thanks for the advice and I’ll be thinking of your ideas when selecting furniture and decorating. Love this series. xx
