Maintaining a Youthful Appearance as You Age

Maintaining a youthful appearance as you age can be a real challenge. No matter how hard you work, the passing of time will always be a factor, and some aspects of aging are inescapable. Most people will get a little ‘wrinkly’, and that’s just the beginning of the fun!

It seems like each year when I celebrate a birthday, there is another change in my body, my appearance and my stamina. I feel great at 63, no complaints here, but I can definitely tell that time is passing.

I try to accept what is inevitable and not obsess over the aging process.

There are some areas in particular, though, which can be tremendously annoying because of their visibility. Case in point: the dreaded double chin. It doesn’t seem to make a difference if you’re overweight or not, it can happen. What can you do? Well, there are several approaches to dealing with this unwelcome friend. Let’s take a look at them.

What Can be Done to Combat the Aging Process

This can be considered in two ways –  the physical and the emotional. It can be quite bothersome to see a photo of yourself that seems to say, “look, I have a double chin!” A simple solution is to change the perspective, literally, and find the more attractive side of you to show the camera 🙂  Has the offending area literally disappeared? No. But you’ve taken some action to feel a bit better about it.

Along with this, consider what’s going on in your head, the emotional side of aging and the physical changes taking place. If you feel devastated over this imperfection, remember that most people probably won’t even notice it.  I know, it’s easier said than done sometimes, but consider this perspective…what is really the most important thing in your life? It’s probably not the double chin.


If you’ve spent any time on my blog, you know that I’m a big proponent of regular exercise, particularly as we age. While exercise won’t turn back the clock, it can be an effective way to look, and feel, younger.

Realistically, there is no magic potion, or exercise, that will turn back the clock. And, by the time we’re in our midlife years we’ve already made choices that affect our physical appearance, myself included.

I’ve made the decision to follow a healthy diet, take some supplements and use exercise – for my body and for my face –  as the main means of retaining a youthful appearance.
