Whether you work from home, need a spot to take care of the budget or simply enjoy a pretty little writing desk to use on occasion, a small home office space can be created with a bit of effort, planning and minimal expenditures. And, it doesn’t have to be boring and utilitarian, either!
As I sip on my coffee in my home office this morning, so many ideas are going through my head.
This is the fun stuff for me, curating options for both the furniture and accessories that make a work space personal and chic.
I’ll show you how much fun and affordable it can be to create a space you’ll love, using photos from past home staging jobs as examples and inspiration, plus plenty of options for you to purchase.
We all deserve to have an area that’s just for us…inviting, cozy (if you can call a writing desk ‘cozy’) and chic with a touch of elegance. A tiny haven of feel-goodness that also provides us some function.
I’ve worked with hundreds of clients over the years, helping them create a home interior that reflects their own personal style. And something as simple as a small work space can actually brighten your day and help you be more productive and positive when it reflects YOU!

Small Home Office Furniture
A chic little office space can be created with nothing more than a simple console table or small writing desk and a chair. That’s all you need, literally, for the home office furniture. Perfect for those small spaces.
Think about what you already have at home that could be used for a small writing desk..repurpose it and save on the cost of a new piece.
Consider these things when deciding what size and style of desk to put in your space:
- Where is the desk going to be placed? Big decision. If you have a couple of possibilities, make sure the desk you choose is the proper size for either area.
- What is the decorating style of your home? Usually you want the writing desk to fit into that style, although this could be the one piece that adds some drama and makes a statement by bringing in a different style. Make it fun and different if you wish.
- How will you use this area? If it is mainly for personal use like journaling, writing letters, or perhaps reading, you’ll take a different approach than if it is going to be a workstation.

And, you can create this simple workspace almost anywhere in your home:
- against a wall in the Living Room
- in a corner of the Kitchen or Nook
- next to the bed, replacing a nightstand (multi-functional!)
- in a loft
- at the end of a hallway
- behind a floating sofa (yep…this really can work!)
- nestled between a pair of accent chairs in the Den
- in a bay window
- placed in an unused corner of the master bedroom
A console table can work very well as long as you remember two things. First, it should not have a lower shelf, bar or any other design style that would prevent you from pulling a chair up to it comfortably. You need somewhere for your tootsies.
Second, make sure the depth is about 16 inches so you’ll be able to fit your laptop, iPad, notebook, etc plus any other decorative or functional accessories.
This is certainly not a necessity, but I also enjoy a placement that affords a bit of a view, even if it is a simple view of the room itself instead of a wall:
You can have some fun with this cozy little space, and add an accent chair that makes a statement of it’s own…or not.
Here are a few examples that I found, showing a simple patterned fabric parsons chair, an acrylic chair that takes up almost no visual space, and a fun furry chair with gold metal legs:
How will you accessorize your small home office space?
Adding the accessories and finishing touches are what really makes your space, well, your own space. No matter how it is used, personal/business/a combination of both, what you have around you should bring you joy.
